Snow Queen Talent Competition forms are in the office. Forms need to be turned in to Mr. Swanson by Wednesday, November 1. Those performing will have run-through on Friday, November 3 at 3:30 PM. Preliminary cuts may be made if there is a large number of performers.

Grades 11-12  ACT:  Registration for the December 9 test is due online by Friday, November 3 . Register at www.actstudent.org   and pay with a credit card.  You will test in Aberdeen but be sure to list Groton as your home school.  Remember you must upload a photo to register and then print the admission ticket.  Fee waivers are available – stop by the GO.  Other test dates are: Feb., April, June, July.   See Mrs. Sternhagen if you have questions.

The ACT test is a curriculum-based education and career planning tool for high school students that assesses the mastery of college readiness standards

Grade 12:  Financial Aid Information:  Financial Aid Information Night meeting will be held on November 6, 2017 from 5:30-6:30 pm in the GHS Computer Lab to help parents with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.  Becky Pribyl, Financial Aid Officer at Northern State University, will be available to explain financial assistance programs and procedures and to answer questions.  She will be able to help parents with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form – please have your child bring his computer, get your FSA ID, and have your 2016 tax information ready if you would like to start the process.  You could get your FAFSA started and maybe even submitted on November 6th!

Grade 12: Prudential Spirit of Community Awards:  If you have performed community service in the past year you may want to fill out this award/scholarship.  One student will be recognized from Groton and will go on to compete statewide and possibly nationally.  Go tohttp://spirit.prudential.com and click on “Apply Now”.  Once you have completed the application go to the “Certification” page and enter Mrs. Sombke’s name and email as the certifier – Kiersten.Sombke@k12.sd.us.  Please print out the completed application.  The local deadline is November 7, 2017 – again you must be certified so please complete by the local deadline.  We can only submit one so PRINT out the application and bring it to Mrs. Sternhagen.

Socktober Challenge 2017 – Here’s how it works: All you have to do is put NEW (not used) socks in the Socktober box located in your designated classroom from October 2-31st. We are looking to collect NEW socks of any size and color for men, women, children, and infants. All of the socks collected at the Groton Area Middle School will be donated to the Salvation Army, Safe Harbor, and Journey Home.

The middle school grade with the highest percentage of pairs of socks donated will hold the ‘Golden Sock’ traveling trophy for the 2017-2018 school year and a party.  Let’s ‘sock’ it to them- Tigers!

Grades 11-12:   Reminder of things to do for the ACT Test on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 in Aberdeen.   Bring your admission ticket and a driver’s license (photo ID), 2 calculators, pencils with erasers, a watch, and possibly a water bottle.  Be sure and show up at the testing location at least 15 minutes early (7:45).  It might be a good idea to review last minute formulas and rules. No caps are to be worn during testing.  No beverage will be allowed in the testing area.  No cell phones are to be used at any time during test (including the break). Testing should conclude around noon.  Those who are taking the writing assessment should be done by 12:45 p.m.  Be sure and do the practice test prior to the test.  Stop by the School Counseling Office if you need an extra copy.

School will dismiss at 1:15 today for Parent/Teacher Conferences.  Please remind your parents that they need to enter through the office doors.  Parents will pick up schedules in the office then will meet with teachers in their classrooms.    Remind your parents to return your schedule to the office before they leave.  Ten bonus point will be given if your parent visit will all your teachers except for classes that you have an A.

Flu shots will be given at the elementary from 11:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  It’s not too late to turn in a consent form.  Be sure to attach a copy of your Medicaid or insurance card.

Grade 12:  Scholarship Night will be held tonight – Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 – from 6:45 – 7:45 in the high school computer lab.  Mrs. Sternhagen will talk about web-based scholarship searches, the FAFSA, the SD Opportunity Scholarship, the Dakota Corps Scholarship, Build Dakota Scholarship, and other scholarship sources.  Additionally, local scholarship applications and information about monthly scholarship deadlines will be available for parents and students to take home.  Please plan to attend with your parents.

Grades 11-12:   Reminder of things to do for the ACT Test on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 in Aberdeen.   Bring your admission ticket and a driver’s license (photo ID), 2 calculators, pencils with erasers, a watch, and possibly a water bottle.  Be sure and show up at the testing location at least 15 minutes early (7:45).  It might be a good idea to review last minute formulas and rules. No caps are to be worn during testing.  No beverage will be allowed in the testing area.  No cell phones are to be used at any time during test (including the break). Testing should conclude around noon.  Those who are taking the writing assessment should be done by 12:45 p.m.  Be sure and do the practice test prior to the test.  Stop by the School Counseling Office if you need an extra copy.

Socktober Challenge 2017 – Here’s how it works: All you have to do is put NEW (not used) socks in the Socktober box located in your designated classroom from October 2-31st. We are looking to collect NEW socks of any size and color for men, women, children, and infants. All of the socks collected at the Groton Area Middle School will be donated to the Salvation Army, Safe Harbor, and Journey Home.

The middle school grade with the highest percentage of pairs of socks donated will hold the ‘Golden Sock’ traveling trophy for the 2017-2018 school year and a party.  Let’s ‘sock’ it to them- Tigers!

The school surplus auction is tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the bus barn.

Flu shots will be given at the high school on Tuesday, October 24 at 9:00 a.m.  Shots will also be given at the elementary from 11:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  It’s not too late to turn in a consent form.  Be sure to attach a copy of your Medicaid or insurance card.

Volleyball players (varsity, JV, and C), Monday, October 23 is Parents Night.  Please give $3 to Mrs. Hoffman.

Grade 12:  Scholarship Night will be held on Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 from 6:45 – 7:45 in the high school computer lab.  Mrs. Sternhagen will talk about web-based scholarship searches, the FAFSA, the SD Opportunity Scholarship, the Dakota Corps Scholarship, Build Dakota Scholarship, and other scholarship sources.  Additionally, local scholarship applications and information about monthly scholarship deadlines will be available for parents and students to take home.  Please plan to attend with your parents.

Grade 12:  Financial Aid Options

  1. Financial Aid and FAFSA Help – Saturday, October 21 at LATI.  LATI is offering financial aid information and FAFSA help on Saturday, October 21 at LATI from 9 am to 2 pm in Watertown for all students who are planning on post-secondary education.   An email with more information was sent to you on Thursday, September 20, 2017.  GHS will host a financial aid information and FAFSA workshop on Monday, November 6th at 5:30 in the GHS computer lab.
  2. Financial Aid and private loan information event will be held on Monday, October 30th at 7 pm at the DEC.  Please see the email I sent you on Oct. 18 for more information.
  3. GHS FAIN – Just as a reminder, there will be a Financial Aid Information Night meeting on November 6, 2017 from 5:30-6:30 pm in the GHS Computer Lab to help parents with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.  Becky Pribyl, Financial Aid Officer at Northern State University, will be available to explain financial assistance programs and procedures and to answer questions.  She will be able to help parents with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form – please have your child bring his computer, get your FSA ID, and have your 2016 tax information ready if you would like to start the process.  You could get your FAFSA started and maybe even submitted on November 6th!
