Grades 11 – 12:  Just a reminder of the free ACT practice program – SDMyLife offers a free online ACT test prep for all SD students. Students can login to their SDMyLife account and click go to ACT Test Prep in the bottom of the left hand column under the Method Test Prep logo. Method Test Prep offers 2 full length exams, practice test and quizzes and vocabulary. All questions have audio, visual and written explanations.  All seniors were shown this program last December in English class.  Juniors can start looking at the program now, too.  Also, Mrs. Sternhagen has many practice ACT books to checkout.  Please stop by the School Counseling office!

CALLING ALL SENIORS

NSU Admissions Office is looking for three seniors to volunteer to participate in a focus group Thursday, September 21 at 4pm in the NSU Thunder Conference Room at the NSU Student Center on campus.  All volunteers receive a free t-shirt curtesy of the Admissions Office of NSU. (Only Seniors can Participate)

Grades 11-12  ACT:  Registration for the October 28 test is due online by Sept. 22nd .  Register at www.actstudent.org   and pay with a credit card.  You will test in Aberdeen or Groton but be sure to list Groton as your home school.  Remember you must upload a photo to register and then print the admission ticket.  Fee waivers are available – stop by the GO.  Other test dates are: Dec., Feb., and April.   See Mrs. Sternhagen if you have questions.

Grade 12 Wendys Heisman:  Scholarship opportunity and recognition for scholar/athletes.  School, state, region, and national winners are selected.   Fill out the application online.  It must be verified by a school official – put me or a teacher (coach who is teacher), or administrator as the Reviewer (Jodi.Sternhagen@k12.sd.us).  No relatives may be recommenders.   Please make sure your GPA (unweighted), class rank and ACT scores are accurate.   Unweighted GPA’s are found on your transcript.  The deadline is October 2, 2017.  In order to insure that the verification process goes smoothly, please complete the application by September 25, 2017 as the site is too busy later in the week.   www.wendysheisman.com.

Grade 12: Prudential Spirit of Community Awards:  If you have performed community service in the past year you may want to fill out this award/scholarship.  One student will be recognized from Groton and will go on to compete statewide and possibly nationally.  Go to http://spirit.prudential.com and click on “Apply Now”.  Once you have completed the application go to the “Certification” page and enter Mrs. Sombke’s name and email as the certifier – Kiersten.Sombke@k12.sd.us.  Please print out the completed application.  The local deadline is November 7, 2017 – again you must be certified so please complete by the local deadline.  We can only submit one so PRINT out the application and bring it to Mrs. Sternhagen.

From the Principal:

1) Homecoming/Manners and Respect: Happy Homecoming 2017!  As all of you move through your homecoming week and participate in extra activities that will take you out of the building, please be mindful of your manners and remember that you are representing Groton Area High School in all that you do.  Make us proud!

2) Backpacks– Students, please remember to keep your backpacks in your locker when you are not using them, this is the only approved location!  See me if you have questions!

3) Lunch time- In the gym!  All students are required to be in the gym during your lunch hour.  Detention will be issued for anyone found roaming the building during your lunch hour.  Please see me if you have questions!

4) Who’s doing good?!  Keep doing good, keep letting me know when students, teachers, or others who work in our building are going out of their way to make this a great place to be.  Be the change you want to see in the world!  Go Tigers!

We are seeking interested student applications for a part-time custodial position between the hours of 3:30 PM and 7:00 PM.  See Mr. Schwan or Mr. Nehls for more information.

Groton’s 2nd Annual Pumpkin Fest will be October 7 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Volunteers are needed!!  If you are interested contact April Abeln at 397-8422 or text her at 216-2982.  Volunteers would need arrive by 9:00 a.m.

Any student wanting to participate in Destination Imagination needs to get sign up forms from the office and sign up by September 29th.
